There are exactly 23 Genma Notes in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Collecting every note unlocks the silver/gold Genma-ologist trophy. Critically, the 23rd note is only accessible following the final confrontation—so reaching the endgame with 22/23 is completely normal.

Notes 1–10: Environmental & Common Foes

The first ten notes cover standard infantry, aerial scavengers, and environmental beasts encountered across early Kyoto districts and the Kiyomizu outskirts.

Collecting early environmental Genma Notes — Always inspect dead-end side paths and breakable wooden crates before triggering major chapter checkpoints.

Unlike later boss notes, environmental notes are housed inside glowing demonic chests or resting on abandoned shoji shelves. Be vigilant in the bamboo grove (Note #3) and underground aqueducts (Note #4).

Notes 11–22: Arch-Demons & Story Bosses

Notes #11 through #22 profile the game's formidable Arch-Demons and key bosses.

Picking up Genma Note after a boss battle — Sweep the perimeter of battle arenas immediately after defeating bosses such as Daidara, Benkei, and Ganryu.

Upon defeating a boss, their respective Genma Note materializes on a stone pedestal or near their discarded weapon. Make it an unbreakable habit to survey the battle area before interacting with the chapter-exit transition.

If your counter says 22 (Note #23)

Read this before you backtrack

Do not backtrack! If your inventory counter displays 22/23 prior to the point of no return, you have collected every available note in the game world.

Note #23 (Minamoto no Yoshitsune) only spawns on the central altar after the climactic duel concludes. Approaching the stone dais in the aftermath allows you to collect the final note and triggers the Genma-ologist trophy pop.

Commonly missed notes: Ifuu & Burai

If your counter reads 20/23 or 21/23 before entering the final sector, you likely bypassed the optional library puzzle:

Note #21 (Ifuu): Located in the hidden library annex behind the rotating bookcase. Pull the blue wall candle switch to reveal the passage.
Note #22 (Burai): Located in the demonic armory on an anvil table surrounded by purple flame sconces.
