Combat explained

Way of the Sword is built on one exchange repeated at rising difficulty: read the commit, answer it, take the souls. Everything below is a system you will use in that loop.

The core loop

You hold ground with Parry, turn attacks aside with Deflect, and punish commitment with Issen. Souls drawn from fallen Genma feed your growth, and Oni powers widen what the same exchange can do.

Everything else in the game hangs off that sequence. Learn to recognise which of the three defensive answers a given attack wants, and the rest of the systems become upgrades to a habit you already have.

Every system

SystemWhat it does
ParryMeet an incoming strike to hold your ground and build pressure instead of giving up space.
DeflectTurn an attack aside so the exchange ends with you in position to answer.
IssenThe counter the whole game is built around — time it to the moment the enemy commits.
Break IssenThe follow-up that cashes in a broken opponent once their posture is gone.
Soul absorptionDraw souls from fallen Genma to feed growth and keep the fight moving.
Oni ArmamentsOni weapons that widen both combat options and traversal.
Oni StrengthAn Oni power that changes how much you can force through an exchange.
Oni AgilityAn Oni power that changes how you close and escape distance.

Which system answers which problem

  • Getting pushed out of position: Parry, then re-establish spacing before you swing.
  • Trading damage you cannot afford: Deflect, and take the answer the deflect gives you.
  • Fights dragging on: go for Issen on the wind-up instead of chipping in safely.
  • An opponent staggering: Break Issen — that window is the payoff, not a separate opener.
  • Falling behind on growth: absorb souls as part of clearing a room, not as a second pass.

For the timing habits behind those calls, see Issen and parry timing.

Puzzles are not puzzle boxes

If you played earlier Onimusha games, the sliding puzzle boxes are gone. Director Satoru Nihei confirmed they were replaced with puzzles built into the stages themselves — so when you are stuck on a "puzzle" here, you are looking at the level, not an inventory item.
