You play Miyamoto Musashi in an early Edo-period Kyoto distorted by Malice and overrun by Genma. It is single-player throughout — there is no online mode and no redeemable codes.
Build the counter habit early
The exchange the game keeps asking for is defensive read into Issen. Practise it on ordinary Genma before you need it on something that punishes a miss, because the alternative — evading everything and poking — stops scaling well.
Souls are the growth economy
Absorbing souls from fallen Genma is how you grow. Treat clearing an encounter and collecting from it as one action rather than two.
Don't look for a puzzle box
Series veterans: the sliding puzzle boxes are gone. Puzzles are built into the stages, so when you are blocked, the answer is in the environment.
Collect as you go
There are 23 Genma Notes and 7 Oni Armaments. The last Genma Note only becomes available after the final boss, so a complete set before the credits is not possible — a counter stuck on 22 late in the game means nothing is missed.
