Dokyo the Transgressor

In the story mission In the Light of an Icy Moon, Musashi confronts Dokyo – The Transgressor. Unlike blade-clashing humanoid duels, Dokyo refuses close-quarters melee combat entirely, teleporting across the rooftop arena and executing isolated, high-impact elemental incantations.

Encounter overview & core mechanics

  • Combat Style: Pure ranged spellcaster / summoner. She flees or teleports whenever Musashi closes distance outside of knockdown windows.
  • Damage Optimization: Single or double Charged Heavy Attacks deal ~500 damage per strike during vulnerability windows, outperforming standard light combos before she teleports.
  • Reflex & Break Issen: Her red attacks rapidly charge your Reflex gauge, and her retaliatory scythe strikes can be deflected for lethal Break Issen counters.

1. Fire pillars & flame waves

Voice cue: "Burn down to the marrow."

Dokyo fire pillars and advancing flame waves
Stand slightly off-center to avoid the center eruption, then dodge forward through advancing flame waves.

Dokyo pulls glowing strings, erupting a straight line of fire pillars down the center of the arena followed by spreading flame waves.

  1. Initial Pillars: Stand off-center relative to Dokyo the moment she speaks her cue to avoid the center line entirely.
  2. Advancing Waves: Watch the flame waves roll forward. Dodge directly forward through the waves as they reach Musashi to close the distance and land a Reflex combo while she recovers.

2. Clone illusion & Oni Vision

Voice cue: "Shall we play a little?" / "How about a little game?"

Dokyo clone illusion tethered by red threads
Activate Oni Vision to reveal the yellow glowing illusion clone, shoot it with the Oni Bow, and punish.
  1. Identify the Fake: Activate Oni Vision. The illusionary clone glows with a distinct yellow silhouette.
  2. Dispel: Quickly shoot the highlighted clone with an uncharged arrow from your Oni Bow.
  3. Punish: Dispelling the clone knocks Dokyo flat on the ground. Sprint over and unleash consecutive Charged Heavy Attacks for massive burst damage.

3. Minions & projectile gauntlet

Kubi Akari (Floating Minions)

  • Phase 1: Do not waste arrows shooting normal minions. Rush Dokyo directly and melee her; the normal heads drift toward her and self-detonate, inflicting substantial friendly-fire damage on the boss.
  • Phase 2: Dokyo summons a distinct Red Kubi Akari. Let it approach Musashi, execute a Grab Reversal, and hurl it directly into Dokyo's face to interrupt her.

Projectile Barrage & Scythe Deflect

Strafe laterally to avoid normal projectiles. Intentionally dodge through red spiked spheres to rapidly fill your Reflex gauge. When disrupted in Phase 2, Dokyo retaliates with a scythe swing: Deflect the scythe to shatter her posture and trigger an immediate Break Issen.

4. Floating moon mask detonation

Voice cue: "Swell and grow... Puff up and go... It's time to end that Oni."

Shooting the swollen moon mask with the Oni Bow
Do not shoot immediately. Allow the orbiting mask to swell to maximum size before releasing an arrow.
  1. Draw the Oni Bow: Aim at the orbiting mask as Dokyo levitates above the shrine roof.
  2. Wait for the Charge: Do not shoot immediately. The larger the mask expands, the higher its explosive self-damage.
  3. Detonate: Release your arrow when the mask reaches peak size. The explosion inflicts ~500 to ~1,200 damage directly against Dokyo plus burn damage over time.

5. Moon meteor cataclysm cover

Voice cue: "You still don't know your place! Well, let me show you."

Dokyo ascends to the heavens, pulling down a colossal flaming moon fragment and lifting floating stone pillars across the battlefield.

  1. Locate Cover: Immediately scan the floating pillars for the single large, solid boulder that does not crumble.
  2. Break Line of Sight: Stand directly behind the solid boulder relative to Dokyo to shield against the arena-wide blast.
  3. Rock Throw: After the blast, interact with the remaining rock shard using Oni Strength to hurl it into Dokyo, knocking her to the roof.
  4. Deflect Follow-up Scythe: If Dokyo is between 25%–50% HP, prepare to Deflect her retaliatory scythe swing immediately following the knockdown.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Do not spam light attacks: Single and double Charged Heavy attacks yield nearly double the damage of light combos before she teleports.
  • Do not shoot masks prematurely: Hitting the mask when it first conjures deals negligible damage. Be patient and wait for peak volume.
  • Save Oni Form for Phase 2: Activating Oni Form in Phase 2 lets you fire a ranged Issen straight through her projectile barrage, skipping the turret head phase entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Can Dokyo be fought with pure melee weapons?

While Musashi inflicts heavy melee damage during her stuns, the encounter requires using the Oni Bow to dispel illusions, detonate moon masks, and safely trigger projectile counters.
