Sasaki Ganryu

In the story mission The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu, Musashi duels his iconic rival, Sasaki Ganryu. As the campaign's premier human duel, Ganryu tests foundational fundamentals: spacing control, defensive discipline, and lateral evasion habits.

The golden rule: distance control

The most important principle in this duel is maintaining mid-to-long distance across the wooden rooftop stage.

Maintaining dueling distance against Sasaki Ganryu
Maintaining distance forces Ganryu into telegraphed gap closers with clear parry windows.

When you duel Ganryu at point-blank range, he chains unpredictable, lightning-fast light slashes that leave almost no reaction window. When you backpedal and force him to cross open distance, he defaults to heavy, heavily telegraphed running thrusts and jumping overheads with exaggerated wind-ups.

Phase 1: Guard discipline & parries

Ganryu's primary offensive rhythm consists of advancing two-hit and three-hit blade combinations.

Executing a deflect counter against Sasaki Ganryu
Parry or deflect the final hit of Ganryu's string, punish with 2-3 strikes, then disengage.
Guard Discipline Rule

If you miss the parry timing on the first hit of a rapid combo, do not release guard to panic-parry subsequent strikes. Keep Guard firmly held down. Standard blocking absorbs his physical swings with negligible chip damage. Releasing guard mid-combo guarantees taking full posture breakage and health loss.

  1. Bait the approach: Wait at mid-range until Ganryu commits to a running slash or jumping overhead.
  2. Parry or Deflect: Tap Guard right before impact (or press Block + A for an instant Deflect).
  3. Punish briefly: Deliver 2 to 3 light attacks or a single heavy strike.
  4. Disengage immediately: Do not overcommit to full strings. Ganryu has rapid hyper-armor recovery and will counter-slash if greedily pressured.

Phase 2: Demonic grab & lateral evade

At approximately 50% health, Ganryu casts off his straw hat, revealing demonic corruption and an outstretched, glowing spectral arm.

Evading Sasaki Ganryu Phase 2 demonic grab
Never roll backward from the glowing grab. Evade laterally or diagonally forward around his flank.

While his sword patterns remain largely identical to Phase 1, he introduces an unblockable, forward-lunging demonic grab.

  • The fatal mistake (backward roll): Ganryu's grab travels forward along your direct line of sight. Backpedaling or back-rolling ensures you get grabbed at the end of your dodge invulnerability frames.
  • The correct counter (lateral evade): Always dodge sideways or diagonally forward past his shoulder. His grab completely whiffs, leaving his back open for a full heavy combo or Reflex string.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Do not spam attacks: Ganryu will deflect or armor through the 4th hit of long combos. Two strikes and backstep is the safest rhythm.
  • Patience over perfection: Standard blocking is extremely durable in this fight. Focus on maintaining distance rather than trying to parry every single blow.
  • Camera discipline: Keep lock-on active at all times so your lateral evasions properly orbit his hitbox.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ganryu's Phase 2 demonic grab be blocked or parried?

No. The grab is a true unblockable command grapple. Attempting to block or deflect it results in heavy damage. You must evade laterally or interrupt it with an Oni Armament skill.
